EP Review: Marvin Sapp, "If I Were an R&B Singer"
Gospel legend's first R&B project is a winner
Legendary gospel singer Marvin Sapp tries his hand at R&B music with his new EP If I Were an R&B Singer. Sapp starts the project with the intro "Conversations with the Bishop," featuring radio personality Tyrene "TJ" Jackson. The duo jokingly talks about Sapp going into R&B music and alludes to a scene from the singer's 2022 biopic. That sets the stage for the singer to confidently say, "If I were an R&B singer, it would sound like this."
This project showcases an impressive lineup of live musicians, enhancing its overall sound and artistry. Johnny Steele brings his expertise in string arrangements, crafting lush, captivating melodies that elevate each track. Theo Akai contributes exceptional guitar skills, adding rhythm and intricate solos that enrich the musical landscape.
Bubby Lewis delivers a powerful bass performance, providing a solid foundation that drives the rhythm forward, while Jeremy Winbush's dynamic drumming adds energy and depth to every piece. Additionally, Roy Cotton enhances the production with his meticulous work on string arrangements, further elevating the project's quality. The seamless integration of these talented musicians, with thoughtful production, engaging songwriting, and impactful vocals, ensures that this EP will resonate with anyone who appreciates authentic musicianship and heartfelt singing.
The project kicks off with "Listen," a captivating track featuring orchestral arrangements that create a rich and emotive soundscape. In this song, the singer tenderly croons his readiness to embrace a new love, expressing his commitment and devotion to his partner. This heartfelt sentiment seamlessly transitions into "Moment or Lifetime," where Sapp skillfully explores whether one desires a fleeting romance or a love that lasts a lifetime.
The lyrics evoke deep contemplation and invite listeners to reflect on the nature of their relationships. As I listened to this song, I couldn't help but think it could also resonate as a gospel piece, beautifully illustrating the concept of God's everlasting love and steadfast presence in our lives. Sapp's son co-writes "Free Fallin," where they paint another picture of the beauty of falling in love, while "Through My Pain" is about finding the light in dark situations.
The outro "My Conviction" closes the album out, where Sapp reassures fans that the EP is a one-time thing and that he will always be gone. Avoiding crass lyrics or trying to appeal to a youthful crowd, If I Was An R&B Singer is a solid project.
